Hockey Australia

Background

Hockey Australia, the premier organisation for field hockey in Australia, was grappling with escalating insurance costs and suboptimal broker services. The existing broker, acting more as an agent for insurers rather than for Hockey Australia, resulted in poor service and unexploited economies of scale among states and territories. Additionally, there was a notable absence of claims and risk management services, which was a significant concern for the organisation overseeing a sport with 110,000 participants.

Our Services

Resilient was tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of Hockey Australia’s risk management program. The objective was to oversee an insurance tender process, devise and implement benchmarking and virtual tender strategies, and ensure the involvement of all states and territories. This was to maximise economies of scale and develop long-term, material sponsorship strategies.

Strategy and Approach

The approach was multi-dimensional, focusing on a detailed examination of current insurance practices, identification of gaps in coverage and services, and benchmarking against industry standards. The strategy also entailed leveraging the collective strength of states and territories to achieve more favourable insurance terms, both in cost and coverage.

Tendering Process and Broker Selection

A rigorous, transparent virtual tendering process was initiated to select a broker who could align with Hockey Australia’s needs. The selection criteria emphasised the broker’s capability to act as a true agent for Hockey Australia, their experience in handling insurance for sports organisations, and their proficiency in delivering comprehensive risk management services.

Outcome

The engagement with Resilient yielded remarkable results for Hockey Australia:

  • Significant cost reductions, with savings around 20% on annual insurance expenses.

  • A dramatic increase in coverage, up to 100%, for all participants across the sport.

  • Enhanced coverage and service improvements for local associations, State bodies, and the national organisation.

  • The establishment of more effective risk management practices and claims services, addressing a previously unmet need.

  • Similar successful strategies have been replicated with other sporting organisations like Volleyball Australia, Skate Australia, Gymnastics Australia, Water Polo Australia, and Badminton Australia.

This case study underscores Resilient’s expertise in redefining insurance and risk management frameworks for sports organisations, leading to significant cost savings, improved coverage, and enhanced service delivery.
